DISH Program Brings People Together

Submitted By: LeSheena Thompson, Nutritionist Case Aide

Barbara (Barb) is 67 and is a participant in the DISH Program (Dining to Improve Socialization and Health). Barb is retired but works part time (2 days a week) as a Direct Support Specialist. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Barb moved to Lima, OH at the age of 25 where she met and married her late husband, Oscar. Barb has 4 children, 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is an active member of the Greater Grace Missionary Baptist Church serving on the Usher Board. In Barbra’s free time she loves to spend time with her friends and family.

Barb heard about the Dish program by word of mouth from some friends who were also Dish participants. They would often go out to eat together after church or get together throughout the week. Barb often felt left out since she had not yet been selected to become a Dish participant and most of the time didn’t have the extra money. March of 2020 Barb was very excited when she’d gotten the news that she had been selected to join the Dish program and now finally she could join her friends for meals.

Being able to dine out and socialize brought joy to Barb since losing her husband. Dining out allowed Barb to reconnect with friends who she hasn’t seen in years who were also a part of the Dish program as they themselves would also be out enjoying a nice, nutritious meal. Barb is very thankful and feels blessed for the opportunity to be a part of the Dish program.
